Repaint:
"Chicago's Own" and "Short Fuse Sallee"
P-51D Mustang "Chicago's Own" and "Short Fuse Sallee",
356th Fighter Squadron, 354th Fighter Group, 9th AF.
Repaints are based on photos appearing in Osprey Aviation Elite 7 -
354th Fighter Group, W. Hess.
Slight variations in the placement of the
stars can be seen among the planes in the squadron.
Having painted the stars
on the repaints, I can attest that it is very
labor intensive to place the stars exactly right. Also, the
black stripe has to be
perpendicular to the 1.8 slant of the engine section in order for the
stars to be sized and spaced evenly around the nose.
Another painting variation, the center fuselage's D-Day stripes are different between Short Fuse Sallee and Chicago's Own.
